SPECIALISM PROJECT // PHONEY

J.D Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye deals with; innocence, belonging and identity, the main character has an obsession with the concept of ‘being phoney’ and has become an icon for teenage rebellion. So I chose to combine this with Harmony Korine’s “Kids”which uses this concept of teenage rebellion, identity and belonging as a basis for a project. I took the idea of being a phoney and made it manifest in the garments I created. These garments featured quilting and stitching to create fake pinstripes, and fake pockets. The project combines tailoring with 90’s American Skate culture. The garments use tailoring elements with street wear influences and silhouettes. The collection misdirects the audience into thinking if the garments are what they seem or phoney.
